Social Value

Social value is about making a positive impact in our communities. It represents a culture that permeates our entire business, with our employees engaged in various initiatives such as site visits, trading with social enterprises, mentoring, and volunteering. By embedding social value into our operations, we aim to foster a sustainable and inclusive environment that benefits society.

Specific initiatives have included –

Contribution at Rochester prison
JP Dunn Construction supported Willmott Dixon with a donation of tools, battery units and lockers, with a value of £3000 for a new training academy in a Kent prison to provide inmates with construction qualifications. See the news here.

Employment of ex-offenders
For many years, JP Dunn Construction had a series of initiatives to assist ex-offenders back into the workplace. Success stories have included one ex-offender who completed a formwork apprenticeship within JP Dunn and was runner-up in the Construct Formwork Apprentice of the Year. A second ex-offender progressed to become one of our most valued Project Managers thirteen years later. This initiative continues today, with the recruitment last year of another ex-offender via the Feltham Employment Hub Unlocking Construction. Having successfully completed a probationary period, he is now starting a formal formworking apprentice course.

Local Procurement
We are committed to local procurement on the sites we are operating, this involves sourcing materials, workforce and apprentices and services from local suppliers and contractors. This approach not only supports the local economy but also helps reduce environmental impact due to shorter transportation distances.

Surplus to Supper is a chosen charity that the company supports.

Surplus helps to bridge the gap between food waste and food poverty. Founded in 2017 in Sunbury-on-Thames, the charity is active in sourcing and distributing surplus food to those in need and fundraising for local food banks and other charities. Food that would otherwise have gone to waste is redistributed for FREE to local Foodbanks, Charities and Community Groups, including Homeless Shelters, Children’s Breakfast Clubs, and Domestic Violence Refuges, Scout and Brownie Groups. This occurs on a substantial scale, with the charity currently collecting and donating on average ten tonnes of food per week.

• Jonathan Dunn is a Trustee of Surplus to Supper, and volunteer MD of the Sunbury Hub. Over the last few years, the company has been involved in several initiatives.

• Collecting and transporting food from the storage facility in Sunbury to food banks based in Elephant and Castle for distribution to those in need. See news item here.

• Clearing the land and constructing concrete bases at the Sunbury Hub for the newly located Surplus shop and a new refrigerated storage facility for the food. See news item here.

• Provision of a new tarmac hardstanding adjacent to the Surplus Market and the refrigeration building at their Sunbury HQ. See news item here.

• Sponsoring our buyer, Jade Callaghan to work at the charity for couple of months. Jade really enjoyed this experience and made such an impact that she is now in a permanent role with the Charity organising events.

• Providing pro bono advice from the SHEQ dept and the plant dept. to the Surplus operational team
